REPRESENT, FAT JOE, 1993, le classic du mois

C’est la rentrée, le soleil disparaît et l’automne pointe le bout de son nez, alors quoi de mieux qu’un classic shit sorti en 1993 qui transpire le son New Yorkais pur ?

Cette année-là, on découvre un  FAT JOE DA GANGSTA (de son premier blaze) des plus cinglant, avec un premier album : REPRESENT, le bien nommé ! C’est produit par, et avec, son crew : le D.I.T.C. On notera la participation de Lord Finesse, Showbiz, Diamond D et également des featurings de Grand Puba et Kool G Rap ! L’album est un hommage à NYC et Fat Joe crache son flow ciselé et assume sa position de Fat Gangsta dans le Bronx. Le single Flow Joe en est un parfait exemple. D’ailleurs, le sample iconique de ce single sera repris plusieurs fois dans le rap, par le Terror Squad (autre groupe de Fat Joe) et aussi NTM dans le son “ On Est Encore Là I”. L’original est de Morton Stevens – “The Long Wait“.

Les sons de Represent sont très Boom Bap et restent intemporels. Notons que Fat Joe fait parti du cercle, très fermé à l’époque, des rappeurs latinos qui ont classés des hits dans les charts à l’instar des Beatnuts et autres Cypress Hill.

Le East Coast Shit garde ses lettres de noblesse grâce à ses activistes ! Et comme dit l’intro : A Word To Da Wise !

It’s back to school time, the sun is fading, and autumn is peeking around the corner, so what better than a classic hit released in 1993 that oozes pure New York sound?

That year, we discover a FAT JOE DA GANGSTA (by his original name) who is utterly striking, with a debut album: REPRESENT, aptly named! It’s produced by, and features, his crew: the D.I.T.C. Notably, there are contributions from Lord Finesse, Showbiz, Diamond D, as well as features from Grand Puba and Kool G Rap! The album is a tribute to NYC, and Fat Joe delivers his sharp flow, embracing his position as the Fat Gangsta from the Bronx. The single Flow Joe is a perfect example of this. Moreover, the iconic sample from this single will be reused multiple times in rap, by Terror Squad (another group of Fat Joe) and also by NTM in the track “On Est Encore Là I.” The original is by Morton Stevens – “The Long Wait.”

The tracks on Represent are very Boom Bap and remain timeless. Notably, Fat Joe was part of the very exclusive circle of Latino rappers who had hits on the charts alongside the Beatnuts and others like Cypress Hill.
