Itâs summer, the weather is nice, itâs hot, vacation for some, and for others, coal. But what’s better than a good Classic Shit from the West Coast to chill after a day at the beach or at work? And not just any.
After honing his skills and producing two classics with his legendary group N.W.A, DR. DRE released his first solo studio album in 1992: The Chronic. The project is named after a strain of cannabis and will see the first appearance of a great enthusiast of smoke: Snoop Doggy Dogg! On the album, we discover the track âNuthin But A âGâ Thangâ while cruising in a lowrider in L.A., or âFuck Wit Dre Day.â
The rap remains gangsta, but this time it is less violent in its delivery. The beats and flows are slower, creating a groovier and more melodic ensemble, with bass lines flooding the interiors and funk samples bringing a dancing sweetness that will leave a mark.
Itâs not the lyrics that the general public will remember the most, yet they portray the raw reality of the ghettos: sex, drugs, settling scores, and the riots in Watts, L.A., in 1992, following the acquittal of the police officers who lynched Rodney King, making the album a snapshot of a time in California.
The Chronic will be certified triple platinum just 11 months after its release and will mark the dawn of G-Funk, a true game changer that set a trend many would follow.
